Building TrustBase: A Free Tool to Score Vendor Legitimacy Using Public Data

Introducing TrustBase: A Free Tool to Assess Vendor Legitimacy Using Public Data

In today’s competitive and often complex procurement landscape, organizations—from government entities to startups—face significant challenges in vetting potential vendors. Making informed decisions requires access to reliable information regarding a vendor’s legal standing, performance history, and overall legitimacy. However, gathering comprehensive data can be time-consuming and often incomplete, leading to increased risks of fraud, misrepresentation, or poor service delivery.

The Need for Transparent Vendor Verification

Procurement professionals routinely encounter difficulties in verifying whether a vendor:

  • Has a questionable legal background or unresolved litigation
  • Has a track record of fulfilling past contracts successfully
  • Is merely a high-profile name without substantiated performance

These uncertainties can compromise procurement outcomes and expose organizations to financial and reputational risks. Historically, there’s been a lack of accessible, centralized tools that leverage public data to streamline vendor evaluation.

Introducing TrustBase: A Data-Driven Vendor Scoring Tool

To address this gap, I am developing TrustBase, a free online platform designed to provide an objective, data-backed score for vendors across the United States. Think of TrustBase as a “credit score”—but specifically tailored for suppliers and service providers.

Key Features of TrustBase (Beta Version):

  • Search Functionality: Easily locate vendors by name, industry sector, or geographical location.
  • TrustBase Score: Receive a comprehensive score ranging from 0 to 100, derived from various factors including:
  • Contract performance history
  • Legitimacy verification status
  • Presence of legal or risk flags
  • Detailed Profiles: Dive into a vendor’s historical contract data and assess their risk profile comprehensively.

Foundation and Rationale

The motivation behind TrustBase stems from the persistent issues of procurement fraud, inadequate vetting procedures, and contract failures. Existing methods often rely heavily on manual background checks or incomplete data sources, which can leave organizations vulnerable.

By harnessing publicly available data—such as government contract records, legal filings, and business verification databases—TrustBase aims to empower procurement teams with transparent, reliable insights. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of making blind procurement decisions and to foster a more accountable vendor ecosystem.

Seeking Feedback and Collaborating for Improvement

As I am currently in the early stages of development, with a minimum viable product (MVP) underway, I invite feedback from potential users and stakeholders:
