Freight broker to procurement

Transitioning from Freight Brokerage to Procurement: A Career Shift Journey

Embarking on a career shift can be both exciting and daunting, especially when you are transitioning within the same industry. With over two years of experience as a freight broker, I find myself ready to explore new horizons in the supply chain sector, specifically within procurement. While I am passionate about this field, my current role doesn’t fulfill my long-term career aspirations due to limited commission payouts.

My experience so far has primarily involved collaborating with energy clients, particularly in crude oil, and some work with metals clients. My aim is to continue in a similar sector as I appreciate the dynamic nature and challenges it presents.

As I chart my path into procurement roles, I am exploring opportunities that align with my interests and skills, but figuring out where to begin has proven challenging. Specifically, I’m uncertain about the kinds of companies or job titles I should focus on.

To bolster my transition, I’m considering pursuing a Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) qualification, given that my supply chain experience is largely confined to freight brokerage. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, which I believe can enhance my understanding and capabilities in procurement.

My job search is centered around key metropolitan areas like New York City and Chicago, as they offer vibrant opportunities in the supply chain industry. I am reaching out to gather insights and advice from others who might have navigated a similar path. Any guidance on how to successfully pivot to procurement, refine my job search, or develop relevant skills would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your support and suggestions as I embark on this new career trajectory.
