Navigating the Stress of Procurement: Is It Always High-Pressure?
As a recent university graduate at 21, I embarked on a new journey into the world of procurement. My first foray was an internship last summer, where I immersed myself in a dynamic and demanding environment, managing supplier outreach, onboarding processes, RFPs/RFQs, and conducting market research to aid in informed sourcing decisions.
During this time, I worked for a mid-sized baking company that experienced a major transition. While my role was focused on our candy category, the acquisition by a much larger enterprise added another layer of complexity to our daily operations.
What struck me most was the sheer intensity of the workload. Almost everyone on the procurement team, except for a couple of indirect members, was constantly working beyond regular hours. It wasn’t merely the extra time but the evident stress that permeated the team. My manager, the embodiment of dedication, often worked late into the night—sometimes until 3 AM. Her constant presence on Teams, appearing frazzled and overwhelmed, highlighted the high-pressure environment we operated in.
Within a month, I too felt the weight of an overloaded schedule. Despite being drawn to procurement for its perpetual activity and challenges, I couldn’t help but wonder if the pace was unsustainable. Particularly in the food industry, where market dynamics and procurement stakes are exceptionally high, the stress factor seemed inevitable. While other sectors might offer a more relaxed pace, I also feared monotony due to fewer market shifts or industry events.
Reflecting on my four months in procurement, I realized that I’m seeking a balance. I desire a role where my contributions are significant but without overwhelming stress and constant urgency. Given the high stakes associated with managing finances and meeting tight deadlines in procurement, I ponder whether it’s inherently stressful across all industries or if certain sectors promise a calmer work life.
As I consider my next steps, I question whether pursuing a different role or industry would better align with my aspirations for a fulfilling yet balanced career. Would a change lead to a less stressful experience, or is stress an intrinsic part of procurement, regardless of the industry? Your thoughts and insights would be greatly appreciated as I navigate these important decisions.
