Are Job Descriptions Becoming Unrealistic? A Real-Life Experience

In the ever-evolving job market, it’s not uncommon to stumble upon job requirements that seem a bit ambitious, if not downright daunting. I recently encountered a prime example during my application for a parts manager role.

After successfully navigating the initial interview stages, I was taken aback to discover that the position entailed overseeing demand planning for a staggering 35,000 SKUs. Furthermore, I would be solely responsible for purchasing and sourcing these items. Although I do have prior experience in handling inventory, my previous role involved managing just around 500 SKUs—a significant difference in scale.

This raises the question: Is such an extensive workload actually feasible? When I inquired about their monthly shipment volumes, the company reported dispatching around 20,000 SKUs. On the surface, basic arithmetic suggests that managing this number effectively could be an almost insurmountable challenge, unless there’s an aspect I’m not considering.

Navigating these demands requires a critical evaluation of the support systems and resources available within the organization. Are your job expectations realistic, or are companies setting the bar impossibly high? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
